Out of the roughly half a million minutes in a given year, most people spend an average of just 60 minutes in a doctor’s office or hospital. It stands to reason, then, that our health is largely influenced by what happens outside of the health care system. However, that doesn’t mean that a well-functioning health system doesn’t matter because when you’re sick, it’s imperative. What it does suggest is that we need to be more active in improving what is available outside of health care systems if we want to make meaningful improvements to our collective health and well-being.
