Black Lives Matter
Like so many, the SIREN team is feeling the enormous weight of the nation’s old and new epidemics: racism and COVID-19. We share heartache and outrage about the murder of George Floyd and other instances of police brutality. Deeply entrenched white supremacy is at the root of these events. It also is the source of the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on Black Americans and other people of color.
In response, we are rolling up our sleeves both where the epidemics intersect and diverge. We recognize now more than ever that our work to strengthen the capacity of the health care sector to facilitate social care (SIREN’s mission) is only part of what we need to do to eliminate our nation's unacceptable health and social injustices. Until there is justice, “health equity” will only be a buzzword.
This is the time to commit ourselves to dismantling the structures, systems, and practices that perpetuate and exacerbate racism, both in and outside the health care sector. We have much work to do.
