NQFGo Convenes Panel of Experts on Social Determinants of Health: Measuring Food Insecurity and Housing Instability

NQF has convened a multi-stakeholder panel of experts to develop a measurement approach for assessing food insecurity and housing instability. The panel will review evidence of effective interventions, conceptual frameworks, and performance measures that can be used to measure outcomes related to two social factors - hunger and homelessness. NQF is conducting this project in collaboration with the Urban Institute and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Evidence is growing that social factors such as where people live, how much money they earn, and their level of education have significant impact on health and well being. Some providers and payers are testing strategies to assess and address social factors that affect individuals’ health. A measurement approach to assess food insecurity and housing instability will provide important guidance for quality improvement and accountability initiatives that ultimately may become part of our nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
