Artificial intelligence and social determinants of health

Primary Care - Clinics in Office Practice

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are the most impacting factors affecting health today, accounting for up to 80% of modifiable health outcomes.

  • The 4 main clinical challenges with regard to SDoH are; knowledge limitations; screening challenges; failure to integrate protective factors into screening; and technical challenges.
  • Artificial intelligence can help surmount these challenges by assisting with research design, overcoming screening barriers, helping integrate protective factors into screening, and addressing technical concerns.
  • PCPs should play a role in the design and utilization of AI in SDoH - both for improved health and the enactment of enlightened governmental policy.
