Caregiver perceptions of social need documentation

Brown R, DeMarco M, Cullen D
JAMA Netw Open

This qualitative study uses a large free-text dataset to describe reasons for comfort and discomfort with documentation of health-related social needs in the electronic health record among caregivers of pediatric patients.

The volume and depth of responses to an optional free-text survey question about perceptions of HRSN documentation in the pediatric EHR suggest that this topic is evocative among caregivers of pediatric patients. Although the results show a near-even divide between those who report comfort vs discomfort with documentation, many participants who reported comfort explained that it was driven by the belief that they do not have HRSNs to document.
