The need for improved coding to document the social determinants of health

There have been calls to standardise recording of social determinants of health to improve clinical practice, research, and policy. We explicitly support this demand, but recognise that existing codes in the ICD system do not encompass all of the most important social determinants of health. Therefore, it is not possible to consistently record social conditions even if practitioners assessed them in a standardised way.
