Each year, millions of Americans face transportation barriers that prevent them from accessing the medical services they need to heal and thrive. As a result, these individuals may struggle to prevent or manage serious health conditions, resulting in worsening health outcomes and rising health care costs. Medicaid Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) plays a key role in addressing these barriers. However, successful delivery of NEMT services can be uniquely challenging. As a result, states have taken a variety of approaches to NEMT, ranging from developing innovative partnerships to restricting or partially eliminating NEMT services. This webinar walked participants through the highlights from all four resources in the new series from the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation and the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer: Non-Emergency Medical Transportation: Past, Present, and Future of a Critical Service. We will begin with an overview of NEMT and its impact on the lives of low-income Americans, briefly discuss current challenges in NEMT delivery and looming threats to access, and end with a deep discussion of strategies for developing a comprehensive response to transportation barriers. This event is recommended for individuals and organizations interested in addressing the transportation barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from accessing health care services. Health care-focused advocacy organizations, public health professionals, health care providers, community-based organizations serving low-income and/or chronically ill populations, and Medicaid participants may particularly benefit from this web forum.
