Nurses and nurse practitioners on the frontline: Ethical and legal responsibilities in caring for immigrant and undocumented patients

Nurses and NPs play a vital role in advocating for immigrant and undocumented patients by addressing systemic barriers, practicing cultural humility, and collaborating with other providers. Many immigrants face challenges such as fear of deportation, lack of health insurance, and language barriers. Nurses can advocate for policies that expand healthcare access and educate patients about available services. Providing culturally responsive care requires ongoing self-reflection and education to understand the unique needs and experiences of immigrant communities. Partnering with social workers, legal advocates, community organizations, and public health agencies strengthens support networks for patients and facilitates access to necessary resources.
