Reconsidering food prescription programs in relation to household food insecurity

Tarasuk V, McIntyre L.
J Nutr

Household food insecurity is a large and persistent problem in many high-income countries, and because of its close association with poor health and chronic disease, people in food-insecure households are overrepresented in our health care systems. A growing body of research now suggests that giving healthy food as “food prescriptions” to food-insecure people with poorly managed diet-related diseases can improve their disease self-management. As interest in this intervention strategy builds, critical examination of the relation between food prescriptions and household food insecurity is needed.
