When Social Determinants of Health 101 for Health Care: Five Plus Five [1] (SDoH 101) was published in 2017, the social determinants of health (SDoH) were emerging as an important topic in health care. Since that time, our nation has experienced the COVID-19 pandemic and its disparate impact on people of color, which has illuminated persistent health inequities and heightened the sense of urgency to reduce these disparities. To make progress towards a more just and equitable society, it is critical to address patients’ social risk factors and needs—especially in populations with disadvantages due to systemic racism or lower socio-economic status—as well as the contextual conditions that underlie those needs.
