Diabetes disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, including racial and ethnic minorities and those at a socioeconomic disadvantage. Designing and updating diabetes guidelines and treatment goals provide a unique opportunity to reduce disparities and promote health equity for vulnerable populations. To achieve these aims, all diabetes clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) should include recommendations to evaluate for social determinants of health (SDHs) and to use shared decision making to develop patient-centered treatment plans based on SDHs.
