Proposals to extend health insurance coverage and improve access to high-quality health care in the US—currently prominent in national policy debates—must find ways to make expansion affordable. Could more investment in social services help? Social service investments have been shown to improve health outcomes, but do they reduce health care spending? These critical questions have important, and nuanced, policy implications.
